Dr Hartley is the lead surgeon for robot assisted joint replacements in Australia. He has performed more of this type of operation than any other Australian surgeon.

Dr Hartley specialises in hip and knee replacements, knee arthroscopies, ACL reconstructions and revision joint replacements. He also performs a select number of hand operations. Dr Hartley is an advanced trauma surgeon, treating fractures of the upper and lower limb.

Dr Hartley was born and raised in Maryborough, Qld before moving to Brisbane at the start of high school where he attended Brisbane Grammar School. He obtained his medical degree from the University of Qld, Brisbane before continuing his post-graduate orthopaedic training in numerous hospitals in Qld, NSW and the ACT.

Dr Matthew Hartley electively took time out from practicing as an orthopaedic surgeon during 2000-2003 and again for a year in 2006 - to train and serve with the highly respected Australian Special Air Service (commonly known as the SAS). This included three tours to Afghanistan (the last being a two month tour in 2010), two tours to East Timor and one tour each to Bougainville and Fiji.

Dr Hartley is the only surgeon in Australian history to be SAS qualified.
